Plusone : หมวกปั่นจักรยานจากมือสี่มือ (Plusone : the 4 hands-made riding caps)

PST ได้มีโอกาศเจอคุณหนึ่งเจ้าของและดีไซน์เนอร์หมวกปั่นจักรยานแบรนด์ Plusone โดยบังเอิญ เลยขอแทรกคิวอันยุ่งเหยิงมาคุยเรื่องการทำหมวกปั่นจักรยานกับคุณพ่อ งาน Custom Made ซึ่งกำลังมาแรง และแรงบันดาลใจให้เกิด เป็น Plusone ขึ้นมา แล้วเราก็ได้รู้ว่าการให้โดยไม่หวังอะไรตอบแทนนั้น อาจจะได้กลับคืนมา มากกว่าที่เราได้ให้ไปซะอีก  

PST:   Plusone เกิดขึ้นได้ยังไง

หนึ่ง:    เริ่มจากความชอบส่วนตัวที่ใช้ชีวิตกับจักรยาน โตขึ้นก็ปั่นจักรยานแล้ววันนึงก็มาเจอ กลุ่มเจ้าหนูสิงห์นักปั่น เป็นกลุ่มที่มีไลฟ์สไตล์ชัดเจน ก็เลยมาคิดว่าปั่นจักรยานแล้วก็น่าจะมี accessory เพิ่มเป็นสีสันมากขึ้น แล้วพอดีที่บ้านทำธุรกิจเกี่ยวกับผ้าอยู่แล้ว ผมมีความรู้เกี่ยวกับ การตัดเย็บเนื่องจากคุณพ่อเป็นช่างเทย์เลอร์ มา 30 ปี ก็เลยได้เรียนรู้วิชาจากคุณพ่อ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น การขึ้นแพทเทิร์นหรือการตัดเย็บ ก็เลยได้โอกาศนำมาปรับใช้ทำหมวกสำหรับปั่นจักรยานขึ้นมา แรกเริ่มก็ไม่ได้คาดหวังว่าจะเป็นธุรกิจจริงจัง แค่อยากทำออกมาให้พวกพี่ๆเค้าก่อน ทุกคนในกลุ่ม เจ้าหนูก็จะมีหมวกของผมใส่ ผลตอบรับก็ออกมาดี คนชอบดีไซน์และการตัดเย็บของเรา ก็เลยคิดว่าน่าจะเอาตรงนี้มาสร้างเป็นแบรนด์ได้ กลายเป็น Plusone ขึ้นมา

PST:    แล้วทำไมถึงชื่อ Plusone

หนึ่ง:    ความหมายของมันคือการให้ เริ่มจากเราทำหมวกให้เพื่อน เราก็ได้กลับมา เช่นราฟก็ช่วย คิดสโลแกน หรืออย่างพี่ตั้มก็ช่วยออกแบบโลโก้ ทั้งที่จริงๆแล้วเราทำให้โดยไม่ได้คาดหวังอะไร แต่ก็ได้กลับมา เป็นบวกหนึ่ง ทุกๆครั้งที่เราทำหมวกให้คนอื่น ทั้งเค้าและเราก็จะได้มามากกว่า หมวก มีอยู่คนนึงผมทำหมวกให้ ผมก็รู้ถึงกระทั่งขนาดรอบหัวของเค้า อีกคนนึงเป็นคุณหมอ เค้าไม่ได้ปั่นจักรยานนะแต่ก็สั่งหมวกผม สั่งมาตลอดทุกคอลเล็คชั่นเลย

PST:   ทำไมถึงเลือกทำงานหมวก

หนึ่ง:    เพราะหมวกเป็น acessory อย่างแรกที่คนปั่นจักรยานจะเห็นก่อนเลย แล้วในช่วงนึง ที่คนนิยมขี่ฟิกซ์เกียร์กัน เค้าก็จะไม่ค่อยใส่หมวกกันน็อคแต่จะใส่เป็นหมวกผ้าแทน ซึ่งจริงๆ แล้วย้อนกลับไปถึงประวัติศาสตร์จักรยาน หมวกผ้าคือจุดเริ่มต้นเลย อย่าง Tour de France ยุคแรกก็ใส่เป็นหมวกผ้ากัน

PST:    การทำงานกับคุณพ่อเป็นยังไงบ้าง

หนึ่ง:    ผมอยู่ใต้จักรพ่อตั้งแต่เด็กๆแล้ว ผมเย็บผ้าเป็นตั้งแต่ 3 ขวบ ช่วยคุณพ่อตั้งแต่เด็กๆเลย ปิดเทอมก็ไปช่วยพ่อที่ออฟฟิศแล้วพอธุรกิจขยาย เปิดที่บ้านเป็นโรงงานก็ช่วยคุณพ่ออีก เรียนรู้ ทุกอย่างไม่ว่าจะเป็นการปูผ้า เลือกผ้า แบกผ้า คือทำมาทุกอย่างจริงๆ มันเป็นการเรียนรู้และช่วย แบ่งเบาคุณพ่อคุณแม่ แล้วผมเองเป็นเด็กที่ไม่ค่อยเถียงผู้ใหญ่ ก็เลยเกิดการเรียนรู้ได้ง่ายขึ้น การสอนของพ่อคือให้ดู จำและทำตาม ซึ่งพ่อเองก็เริ่มธุรกิจผ้าจากการฝึกงาน สมัยก่อน 40 ปีที่แล้ว พ่อก็เริ่มจากการแซ็ครังดุม ทำอย่างงั้นอยู่ 6 เดือน ไม่มีใครสอนวิชาเลย แต่คุณพ่อใช้การ สังเกตุและจดจำเอา หลังจาก 6 เดือนก็ตัดสินใจออกจากงาน มีติดตัวมาแค่กรรไกรกับเหล็กทุบ มาสมัครร้านเทย์เลอร์แล้วก็ทำงานให้ดีที่สุด ตั้งใจที่สุด งานเลยออกมาปราณีตและเนี๊ยบมาก จนวันนึงมาตั้งก๊วนกับคุณลุงเปิดร้านชื่อ ลอร์ด เทย์เลอร์อยู่ที่ลพบุรี ดังมาก ใครไปลพบุรีก็ต้อง ไปตัดชุดที่ร้านนี้

PST:    ในส่วนของงานดีไซน์หมวก มีขั้นตอนยังไงบ้าง

หนึ่ง:    เริ่มเลยคือผมยังจะทำความรู้จักกับเนื้อผ้าแต่ละชนิดก่อนว่ารายละเอียดของมันเป็นยังไง ให้ความรู้สึกยังไง เวลามันจับคู่กันแล้วจะเป็นยังไง เป็นการลองผิด ลองถูกไปก่อน ซึ่งก็มีคุณพ่อ คอยให้คำแนะนำ อย่างเช่นถ้าผ้ายีนส์มาจับคู่กับลูกฟูกมันจะย้วยนะ ไม่สวย พ่อก็จะถ่ายทอด ประสบการณ์ ผมก็ออกแบบแล้วให้คุณพ่อเย็บ พ่อก็จะตั้งใจมาก ตอนเริ่ม เนี่ยพ่ออายุ 68 ผม 28 ห่างกัน 40 ปี แต่เราก็ทำงานเข้ากันดีเป็นทีมเวิร์ก เพราะพ่อเองก็อยาก ผลักดันให้มันเกิดขึ้นจริงๆ ผมเองก็เพิ่งรู้ว่าคุณพ่อเป็นช่างที่เก่งมากๆ อย่างประวัติความโด่งดัง ของร้านลอร์ดผมก็เพิ่งมารู้ จากญาติๆเมื่อปีสองปีนี้เอง

PST:    Plusone เริ่มจริงจังมากี่ปีแล้ว

หนึ่ง:    เราเริ่มเราก็จริงจังเลยเพราะมองว่ามันคือธุรกิจ เราเริ่มเมื่อต้นปี 2011

PST:    ความที่หนึ่งเป็นดีไซเนอร์ พอมาทำธุรกิจจริงจัง มีปัญหาเกี่ยวกับการบริหารบ้างมั๊ย

หนึ่ง:    ทุกๆอย่างมีปัญหาหมด แต่อย่างแรกเลยคืออย่าคิดว่ามันคือปัญหา แต่ให้เรียนรู้จากสิ่ง ที่เกิดขึ้น เพราะเราเองก็เริ่มจากศูนย์และอย่างน้อยเราก็ไม่มีต้นทุน หรือถ้ามีก็ต่ำมาก เพราะผม เองก็เป็นดีไซน์เนอร์เองด้วย ผมให้คุณค่ากับการเพิ่มมูลค่าให้ชิ้นงานแต่ละชิ้นมากกว่า การที่เรา ผสมผสานจากผ้าวัตถุดิบบวกกับการดีไซน์ และคอนเนคชั่นจากเพื่อนๆพี่ๆ  มันก็เป็นจริงได้ อย่างที่ได้ราฟช่วยคิดสโลแกนให้ พี่ตั้ม Mamafukka ที่ดีไซน์โลโก้ให้ ทุกคนช่วยเหลือกัน เราโตแบบค่อยๆเป็นค่อยๆไป เราเป็นเล็กแต่ลึก

PST:    Plusone มีไปร่วมงานกับแบรนด์ดังมาบ้างเหมือนกัน แล้วอนาคตมองไว้ว่ายังไง

หนึ่ง:    โปรเจ็คเรามีหลากหลายมาก ทางนึงอยากทำหมวกให้ถึงที่สุด มีออกมาหลายๆทรง หลายๆแบบ อีกทางนึงคือเป็นแฟชั่นจักรยาน มี accessory หลายๆอย่าง เสื้อ กางเกง ถุงเท้า รองเท้า ต่างๆ

PST:    ตั้งแต่เริ่มทำหมวกมา มีหมวกกี่ดีไซน์แล้ว

หนึ่ง:    มี custom made ทั้งหมดเกือบพันใบแล้ว พ่อบู๊มาก อย่างวันนึงก็ทำเป็นสิบใบ แล้วก็ยังมี แบบที่เป็นคอลเล็คชั่นอีก ทุกใบพ่อเย็บเองหมดมีผมเป็นผู้ช่วย ทำเองกันอยู่สองคน

PST:    ที่ทำมาหมวกใบไหนยากที่สุด

หนึ่ง:    งาน custome made น่ะยาก มันยากตอนเริ่ม เพราะเราต้องจับความรู้สึกให้ได้ อย่างตอนก่อนจะเป็น Plusone ก็ต้องทำวิจัยตลาด ส่งข้อความใน Social network บอกว่า เราจะทำหมวกให้ แต่ขอข้อความที่บ่งบอกถึงความเป็นตัวคุณ บางคนร่ายยาวมาเลย เราก็ต้อง ตีความตรงนั้นออกมาเป็นผ้าเป็นสีสันและดีไซน์ มีคนนึงอยู่เชียงใหม่ ผมก็ไปเชียงใหม่ไปมอบ หมวกให้ถึงมือเลย เค้าก็ดีใจมาก

PST:    แล้วใบไหนภูมิใจที่สุด

หนึ่ง:    มันยังไม่ถึงที่สุดนะ มันยังมีที่เราอยากจะทำอีก เพราะถ้าคิดว่างานนั้นพีคแล้ว มันก็จะไม่มีงานดีๆออกมาอีก

PST:    เล่าถึงชีวิตการปั่นจักรยานให้ฟังหน่อย

หนึ่ง:    ตอนเด็กเลยปั่นจักรยานสี่ล้อ พ่อซื้อให้ ก็ปั่นไปทุกที่ พอโตขึ้นก็ชอบ BMX แต่ก็ไม่มีตังค์ พ่อไม่ได้ตามใจทุกอย่าง ต้องหาเอาเอง แล้วจักรยานสมัยนั้นราคาแพง ก็ไปรู้จักเพื่อนข้างบ้าน ที่ทำโรงเหล็ก ก็เลยไปหาโครงเก่าๆ มาตัดต่อเป็นจักรยาน custom made ของตัวเอง หนักมาก แต่ก็ภูมิใจที่ของเราไม่เหมือนใคร พอถึงวัยทำงานก็คิดว่าการใช้จักรยานไปทำงานจะสะดวก และได้ออกกำลังกาย ก็ขี่เสือภูเขามา 4-5 ปี จนวันนึงมันหาย เพราะไปคุยงานที่ซอยอารี แล้วก็จอดทิ้งไว้ มันเป็นช่วงหาเสียงเลือกตั้ง ดันไปจอดไว้ระหว่างป้ายสส. ป้ายมันบังรถไว้ ทั้งสองข้างเลยแต่ก็ล็อคลวดสลิงไว้นะ ไปคุยงาน 15 นาที ได้งานกลับบ้านแต่จักรยานหายไปแล้ว เหลือแต่ลวดที่ล็อคไว้กับเสา ไปขอดูกล้องวงจรปิดก็เห็นแต่ป้ายสส. ตั้งแต่นั้นมาก็ไม่ได้ปั่นเลย จนวันนึงมาเจอรุ่นพี่ Mamafaka ซึ่งเค้าปั่นอยู่กับแก๊งค์เจ้าหนูอยู่แล้ว เค้าก็ชวนเรามาปั่นแต่เรา ก็ยังไม่อยากหรอก จนกระทั้งได้ไปเชียงใหม่ ไปดูงาน ride a life ที่พวกเจ้าหนูจัด โห เท่มากเลย คิดว่าเมืองไทยมียังงี้ด้วยเหรอเนี่ย มันเท่ สุดยอดมาก เลยคิดว่าต้องปั่นจักรยานแล้ว เราต้องเท่ ต้องมี accessory ให้ได้เลย

PST:    เหมือนกับเจ้าหนูเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้เกิดเป็น Plusone นะ

หนึ่ง:    มากๆเลย พอมา ride a life 1.2 ที่ลิโด้ สยามสแควร์ ก็ร่วมส่งแสดงงานด้วย วาดการ์ตูนและเริ่มวาดโดยคอมพิวเตอร์ มันก็เป็นแรงผลักดันให้เราทำงานที่ตอบสนอง กับไลฟ์สไตล์ที่เราชอบด้วย

PST:    เห็นว่าเคยพาแก๊งค์เจ้าหนูไเที่ยวบ้านที่ลพบุรีด้วย

หนึ่ง:    แรกเริ่มเลยคือมีแพลนว่าจะไปถ่ายสารคดี ของ Plusone มีการไปปั่นจักรยานกัน มีการตั้งกล้องถ่ายวีดีโอ เขียนสคริปท์เรียบร้อย แต่พอเอาเข้าจริงคนนัดไปไม่ได้ ไม่ว่าง แล้วแต่ละคนในแก๊งค์มีพี่ตั้ม พี่โอ๊ค รุ่นใหญ่กันทั้งนั้น ผมก็เกรงใจมาก แต่ทุกคนก็ยังไปกัน มีราฟตามมาตอนกลางคืนด้วย พวกเรานั่งรถไฟไปกัน ทุลักทุเลมาก พอไปถึงสถานีก็มีชาวคณะ มาต้อนรับ เป็นเด็กๆที่ชื่นชอบพวกเจ้าหนู แล้วระหว่างทางเราก็ดื่มกินมาในรถไฟ พอไปถึงมัน ก็เมาแล้ว ลงรถไฟก็ปั่นจักรยานเข้าบ้านผม สองทุ่มเราก็เริ่มปั่นอีกรอบ ปั่นออกไปร้านก็ไปทานข้าว ทานเหล้า แต่โชคดีที่ระยะทางปั่นจากที่นึงไปอีกที่มันเพลิน ลมตี มันก็รู้สึกดี คืนนั้นก็ไปทั้งหมด 4 ร้าน สรุปออกจากกรุงเทพ 4 โมงเย็น ถึงลพบุรี 6 โมงเย็น กว่าจะได้นอนก็ตี 4 ปั่นไปทั้งหมด 30 กิโล วันรุ่งขึ้นก็ทำบ้านเป็น open house พ่อเย็บหมวกให้กับทุกๆคนที่มา มีพวงกุญแจ ถ่ายรูป ถ่ายแฟชั้น พ่อเย็บหมวกโดยการที่จับคาแร็คเตอร์และสีของจักรยาน และทำเป็นหมวกขึ้นมา สนุกดี แล้วทุกคนได้มีส่วนร่วมทำของของตัวเองด้วย นับว่าเป็นการแลกเปลี่ยนประสบการณ์ สิ่งดีๆแก่กัน ก็เป็นทริปที่ประทับใจและเป็นจุดกำเนิดของ Plusone เลยทีเดียว

PST got a chance to meet with Nueng, the owner/designer of Plusone brand, Bangkok's up and coming riding cap brand. So we talked to him about doing a business with his dad, the popular custom made riding caps and the inspiration that started off Plusone. At the end, we learned that sometimes when we give without expecting anything in return, we could actually receive something that is more valuable than what we first gave away.

PST:     How did Plusone start?

Nueng: It started from my passion for cycling and until one day that I met JNSNP (Jao Noo Sing Nuk Pun), the group that has a unique lifestyle and character. So I thought that ones should have accessories when riding bicycles. And my family business involved tailoring, my dad has been a tailor for 30 years so I studied from him. I learned how to make patterns and sewing, and then had a chance to make riding caps. I didn’t really think it would turn out to be my bread and butter business, I just wanted to make the caps for my friends in JNSNP. However, the feedback was really good. People loved my design so I thought I could really turn this into a brand that sells.

PST:     And what’s the meaning of the name Plusone?

Nueng: It means giving. Starting from when I made the caps for friends, and they helped me back in return. Raf helped me with the slogan while Tum Mamafaka designed the logo for me. So starting from one I got a plus one in return. Everyone got more than they give. There’s a customer that I even know what his head measurement is, or a doctor who doesn’t ride a bike but always buy my work from every collection.

PST:     Why did you choose to make caps?

Nueng: Riding cap is the first accessory one would notice when a biker passing by. And when the fixed gears were a hit, most riders didn’t wear helmet, only fabric caps. If you look back at the history of riding, you would notice that the very first era of Tour de France, bikers then wore riding caps not the actual helmets.

PST:     How is working with you father like?

Nueng: I have been playing under my dad’s sewing machine since I was little and have been helping out every school holiday. So I have naturally learned the process of making clothes. I was an obedient child so I got to learn better from my parents. My dad used to be an apprentice at a tailor shop, for 6 months the only thing he got to do was making button-holes. But he learned things by observing and remembering. Until one day he quitted the job and applied for a tailoring position in a bigger shop. He worked hard and put so much effort into his detailed work, and one day he and his friends opened a shop called Lord Tailor in the town of Lopburi, which was very famous and popular during that time.

PST:     What is the process of designing the caps?

Nueng: Initially I had to study the nature of the fabrics, what are their characters and the pairing like, for example, jeans don’t pair well with chords because the fabrics won’t line well with each other. With the help from dad, I got to learn all that is needs. I would design the caps and dad would sew them. Even though he’s 40 years older than me but we work very well together cause we both really wanted Plusone to happen. I only knew recently that my dad was a really famous tailor at Lord Tailer!!

PST:     How long has Plusone been seriously operated?

Nueng: We have been serious from the start because we treated it as a business. We started in early 2011

PST:     Well, you are a designer, what are the problems when you are dealing with the business and the management?

Nueng: Every part has its own problem but we I don’t tend too see them as a problem. Instead I learn from them. We started from zero so there is nothing to loose and lucky that we have a low cost of production. Nevertheless, I give more weight to the process of adding value to our works. By adding design to raw materials and connections I got from friends, Plusone was really happening. Even though we are not a big business but I believe that we are like a small tree with the deepest and strongest roots.

PST:     Recently, Plusone has been in collaborations with other big brands, what are your future projects?

Nueng: I have thought of a couple of projects that could really push the limits of hat designing or making a line of bike fashion, with accessories such as tops, bottoms, socks or shoes.

PST:     Since day one, how may designs have you made?

Nueng: There are nearly one thousand custom made caps, every piece are hand made by my dad and I, and this doesn’t even include all the collections that have been out.

PST:     Were there difficult ones to make?

Nueng: The custom made ones are quite difficult because you have to interpret what the customers want. Before becoming Plusone, I had to do a market research by posting messages in the social network. I would make people a cap in exchange of them describing their characters and personalities, and I would have to translate the information into the design, types of fabrics and colours. And you won’t believe that some people did write for pages describing themselves. One of my participants lives in Chiangmai, he was so happy I traveled up there and handed the cap to him myself.

PST:     Which one is your ultimate design cap?

Nueng: There isn’t one yet. I still want to make more. I believe that if I’m really satisfied with one then there wouldn’t be any good ones afterwards.

PST:     Please tell us of your bicycle life

Nueng: When I was a kid I rode the 4 wheels bike and started to like the BMX bikes when I was a bit older. But my dad didn’t spoil me so I had to earn what I want. I had a neighbor whose family was in the metal business so I luckily got old metal parts from him. I custom made my own bike and it turned out to be very heavy but I was proud of it and rode it everywhere. When I started working in Bangkok, I rode mountain bike to work for nearly 5 years cause it was fun and I got to exercise until one day it was stolen. It happened when I rode to pitch the work and parked the bike between the 2 big politician cut outs, I locked it with the pole and went into the meeting. When I finished, got the project but the bike was gone. So I stopped riding. One day I met ‘Mamafaka’ who is a member of JNSNP, he asked me to come ride with him but I hesitated. Until I went to ‘Ride a Life’ exhibition by JNSNP at Chiangmai, I experienced the lifestyle that was so cool and inspirational. I wanted to be as cool as the JNSNP and I got to have the accessories to go with my ride.

PST:     So JNSNP was really your inspiration?

Nueng: Totally. Then there was a ‘Ride a Life 1.2’ at Lido Siam Square, I got to showed case my work in the exhibition too. So it was the start of the lifestyle that I like.

PST:     You once took JNSNP to ride at your home town Lopburi too?

Nueng: We had an initial plan of filming a documentary about Plusone and bicycle riding. Cameras were arranged and the script was written, but at the end the project leader couldn’t make it. So the trip didn’t start off as smoothly as expected. We all got on a train and were well received at the end station by the local boys who are fans of JNSNP. On the train, we have already started drinking so by the time we got to Lopburi we were pretty drunk. Then we rode to my house and started our night ride at 8pm and rode to 4 bars that night. In summary we left Bangkok at 4pm, arrived Lopburi at 6pm and went to bed at 4am, we rode in total of 30 km. And the next day we turned my house into an open house where everyone got to help my dad making their own caps and key chains. Dad made them according to each bike’s character and colour. So it was a memorable trip that was actually the start of Plusone.
