นินา: สนุกมาก
คืออยู่ที่นู่นไม่ได้ขี่จักรยานเป็นการออกกำลังกาย แต่ขี่ในชีวิตประจำวัน คือขี่ทุกวัน ขี่จากบ้านไปโรงเรียน ไปซูปเปอร์มาร์เก็ต ไปดูหนัง เพราะฉะนั้นจะไม่ได้รู้สึกว่าจะต้องแบบ
วันนี้เราไปขี่จักรยานกันเถอะ มันกลายเป็นอุปกรณ์ที่ใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน
แล้วความที่ที่นั่นเป็นเมืองจักรยาน จะเห็นนักเรียนขี่จักรยานกันเยอะ
และถนนหนทางมันดี เมืองที่อยู่มีแม่น้ำวิ่งผ่าน และจะมีทางเรียบแม่น้ำ ที่คนไปวิ่ง ไปขี่จักรยาน ซึ่งทางจะยาวและวิวสวยมาก บรรยากาศดี
PST: เท่าที่เห็นในสื่อต่างๆ คนที่ขี่จักรยานในเมืองหนาวจะแต่งตัวกันเยอะๆหน่อย ใส่
แจ็คเก็ต บู๊ท
หรืออย่างผู้หญิงก็ใส่รองเท้าสูงหรือใส่เดรสกันเลย
ได้แต่งตัวจัดเต็มขี่ที่โน่นกันบ้างมั๊ย
นินา: ความที่บอสตันเป็นเมืองหนาว
เพราะฉะนั้นหน้าหนาวจะใส่เสื้อแจ็คเก็ตแบบกันน้ำ มีกางเกงกันน้ำเวลาฝนตกแล้วก็ใส่รองเท้าบู๊ท
แบบใส่แล้วไม่ได้ดูสวยเลย พอถึงคณะปั๊บต้องวิ่งเข้าห้องน้ำแล้วถอดทุกอย่างออก
อย่างวิลก็จะมีกางเกงสองตัว แจ็คเก็ตสองตัว เพราะเวลาหิมะตกเราก็ยังขี่กันไง
แล้วเวลาหิมะตกหนักๆ จะมีหิมะน้ำแข็งที่พื้น แล้วเวลามันละลาย จะเปียก แฉะมาก
วิล: ใช่
ต้องมีแจ็คเก็ตสำหรับขี่จักรยานสองตัว สำหรับเวลาฝนตกตัวนึงกับฝนไม่ตกตัวนึง
PST: แล้วขี่จักรยานที่เมืองไทยหล่ะ
วิล: ก็สนุกดีนะ
นินา: แต่เราไม่สนุกเลย
รถเยอะทั้งมอเตอร์ไซค์ รถเมล์ แท็กซี่ ขี่แล้วกลัวตาย เครียด คือถ้าขี่เสาร์อาทิตย์เนี่ย เราชอบนะ ขี่จากบ้านไปพระอาทิตย์ มันก็สนุกดี
ได้ออกกำลังกาย แต่อย่างเมื่ออาทิตย์ที่แล้วลองขี่ไปสอนที่จุฬา ตอนขาไปโอเค แต่ขากลับดันกลับช่วงเลิกงานพอดีตอนห้าโมงเย็น รถเยอะและติดมาก มันต้องหลบหลีกอย่างเดียวเลย
แล้วมันเครียด กลัวล้มแล้วรถเมล์ทับหัว แต่ว่าวิลขี่จากบ้านไปสอนที่จุฬานะ
วิล: ขี่ทุกวัน
ไปจุฬา จากบ้านไปก็สิบนาที
PST: แสดงว่าต้องขี่เก่งนะ
มีทักษะหลบหลีก
วิล: อืม
ต้องมีสมาธิและใส่ใจ
PST: สถานที่ที่อยากไปขี่มากที่สุด
นินา: เราอยากไปขี่ในอุทยานที่ไม่มีเนิน
ไปดูธรรมชาติ แต่ขอถนนทางเรียบนะ
วิล: อยากขี่ไปแคมป์ปิ้งในอเมริกา
ขี่จากรัฐนึงไปอีกรัฐนึง
PST: ประสบการณ์การขี่ที่แย่ที่สุดเป็นยังไง
นินา: คือขี่จากอารีย์กลับไปบ้านที่วิภาวดีตอนกลางคืน
แล้วขี่ไปตามทางใต้ bts
มันมีทั้งรถเมล์รถแท็กซี่ปาดหน้าซ้ายขวาตลอดเวลา อันตรายและเครียดมาก
เพราะเราก็มองไม่ค่อยเห็นทางแล้วเค้าก็มองไม่ค่อยเห็นเรา แล้วพอหลุดตรงนั้นมาได้ก็นึกว่ารอดแล้ว
พอเลี้ยวเข้าวิภาวดี เจอรถวิ่งกันแบบกระเจิงเลย
วิล: ไม่ชอบขี่ตอนฝนตกหน่ะ
แต่มีทีนึงที่โรม อิตาลี ก็ซื้อจักรยานมือสอง ราคา 25 ยูโร
มาใช้ระหว่างอยู่ที่นั่น ในเมืองมันมีรถรางวิ่งรอบ แล้วก็ไปขี่บนรางรถราง
ซึ่งจริงๆแล้วเป็นความคิดที่ไม่ดีเลย แต่ก็ขี่ทุกวันน่ะ
แล้ววันนึงฝนตกมันลื่นแล้วขี่พลาด
ทำให้ล้อรถลื่นไถลเข้าไปติดอยู่ในร่องของรางรถราง แล้วก็ยากมากกว่าจะดึงออกได้
โชคดีที่ไม่มีรถรางตามมา มันเป็นประสบการณ์ที่แย่มากอันนึงเลย
PST: ตอนนี้ทั้งสองคนมีจักรยานคนละคัน
ถ้าจะซื้อกันอีกคัน จะเป็นรถอะไร
วิล: รถที่มีเกียร์
นินา: อือ
กำลังจะพูดเหมือนกันเลย ขอรถมีเกียร์หน่อย จะได้ไปขึ้นเขาได้
วิล: แต่ไม่ใช่เสือภูเขานะ
เป็นทัวร์ริ่ง
นินา: แล้วยิ่งรถเราตอนนี้
จานหน้ามันใหญ่มากมันเลยหนักมาก ถ้าเปลี่ยนจานก็น่าจะสบายขึ้น
PST: ผู้ชายแบบไหนที่ขี่จักรยานแล้วดูเซ็กซี่
นินา: เราชอบผู้ชายที่ขี่จักรยานแล้วไม่ได้แต่งตัวเหมือนจะไปขี่จักรยาน
เป็นพวกใช้จักรยานไปทำงานหรือนู่นนี่ คือไม่ได้มาเต็มยศ
PST: แล้ววิลชอบแบบไหน ผู้หญิง
วิล: ชอบผู้หญิงที่เวลาขี่จักรยานแล้วแต่งตัวชุดสูทแบบจะไปทำงาน
มีทั้งแจ็คเก็ต กระโปรงหรือกางเกง พร้อมเข้าประชุมได้เลย คือทุกครั้งที่เห็นผู้หญิงขี่จักรยานในส้นสูงและเดรสยาวจะรู้สึกประหลาดใจมาก
ว่าขี่ได้ไง คิดว่าเค้าต้องมั่นใจในสิ่งที่เค้าทำอยู่มากๆเลย
PST: อยากให้เมืองไทยมีกิจกรรมเกี่ยวกับจักรยานอะไรบ้าง
นินา: ใส่จูงกระเบนกับสไบขี่จักรยาน
วิล: ที่อเมริกามีงานปั่นจักรยานไปดูหนังกัน
ถ้ามีแบบนี้ที่เมืองไทยก็น่าจะดี โดยเฉพาะถ้าจัดในต่างจังหวัด
PST: ชอบอะไรในการขี่จักรยานมากที่สุด
วิล: กลับถึงบ้านชั่วโนงนึงก่อนนินา
นินา: ออกจากจุฬามาพร้อมกัน
เรารถติดอยู่ในรถ วิลนี่แบบชิล มาถึงบ้านอาบน้ำ กินข้าวเสร็จเรียบร้อยแล้ว เราชอบจักรยานเพราะเรารู้สึกว่ากำลังเคลื่อนที่อยู่
ไม่เหมือนอยู่ในรถ มันมีความรู้สึกแบบลมตีหน้า มีแรงสั่นสะเทือนอะไรบางอย่าง เราชอบตรงนั้นน่ะ
วิล: ชอบที่สุดคือการไปที่ไหนต่อไหนคนเดียวได้
แค่กางแผนที่แล้วเลือกว่าอยากไปไหน หรือไปที่ที่ไม่เคยไปมาก่อนแล้วก็คิดว่าจะไปทางไหนดี
มันเป็นวิธีที่ดีสำหรับการไปพักผ่อนนอกเมือง หรือแม้แต่การหาถนนหนทางไปใหม่ๆในเมืองเองก็ตาม

Nina Yarinda Bunnag (professor, architect, musician and actress) and Will Patera (professor, architect and artist) were studying for
postgraduate degrees in Boston during 2010-2012, so we asked them about riding
in the states.
PST: How was
riding in the states?
Nina: It was a lot
of fun. We didn’t ride to work out but as a mean of daily transportation for
example riding to college, supermarket or to cinema. So I didn’t feel like oh
let’s go riding a bike today! And Boston is a college city so lots of students
ride bikes. The roads are good and the sceneries are awesome. There’s a river
that runs along the city and so lots of people jog and bike along the river road.
PST: As seen in the media, bikers abroad tend to dress up when they bike. Were
you be able
to something like that too?
Nina: Boston was
very cold so we had to wear waterproof outfits and boots. So overall it didn’t
look that nice. I had to get change as soon as I got to the faculty. Will even
had 2 sets of jackets and pants. We also rode in snow, and when it snowed a lot
there would be ice on the ground. And when it melted the ground could become
very wet and soggy.
Will: Yeah, I
had to have 2 jackets. One for when it was raining and one for when it wasn't.
PST: How about
riding in Bangkok?
Will: It’s fun.
Nina: But I don’t
find it fun at all. There are lots of cars, taxis and motorcycles that scare me
to death. But I like riding at weekends, like from home to Pra-atid road.
However, I rode from home to teach at Chula University last week, and it was a
nightmare. From home to the college was ok but I left the college at the rush
hour. There were so many cars and the traffic was jammed. I couldn’t really
properly ride, only trying to avoid cars and other obstacles especially trying
not to fall down and get run over by a bus. It was such a stressful ride. But
Will does ride from home to Chula.
Will: I ride
everyday. It only takes 10 minuets from home.
PST: So it means
you have to be very skillful.
Will: I just
have to pay attention.
PST: Where is your dream riding destination?
Nina: In a natioanl
park, in the forest preferably with no hilly roads.
Will: I want to
ride across the states and camp along the way.
PST: What’s your
worst experience in riding?
Nina: I rode from
Aree road back to my house on Vibhavadi road at night once. I was riding along
under the BTS track and there were buses and taxis swerving all the way. And it
was dark so I couldn’t really see and guessed they couldn’t see me too. And when
I turned into Vibhavadi road, thinking the nightmare was over, but no, the
cars there were even faster and more furious.
Will: I hate
riding int he rain. But there was a time when I was in Rome, I bought a bike
for 25 Euros and I rode everyday on the tram track which wasn’t a very good
idea. And one day it rained and the wheel slipped and got stuck in the track.
It took me a while to get it out but lucky no tram was coming then.
PST: So now both
of you has a bike each, what would be your second?
Will: Something
with gears.
Nina: That’s what
I was about to say! Yeah something with gears go that I could climb hilly
roads.
Will: But not a
mountain bike, a touring bike perhaps.
Nina: And right
now my bike has such a big front chain wheel so it’s really stiff, maybe if I change it’d be much better
PST: What kind of guy do you think is sexy when
riding a bike?
Nina: I like guys that don’t look like they are
dressing up just for riding. I like guys in normal everyday clothes that happen to bike to work.
PST: And Will, what kind of girls do you like?
Will: I like women who dress in full suit and
ride to work, ready to be in a meeting in a jacket and skirt or something. I’m
always amazed when I see women ride in their dresses and high heels, they must
be pretty confident in what they are doing.
PST: Which kind of bike activity would you like
to see happening in Thailand?
Nina: Riding in Joongraben and Sabai (Thai
traditional costume for women)
Will: In the states they have bike film festival,
I think it’d be nice if there’s something like that in the provinces.
PST: What do you like most when riding a bike?
Will: Getting home an hour before Nina
Nina: We left Chula at the same time. I got stuck
in the traffic but Will got home an hour before me. He had a shower and dinner
and just chilling out on the couch when I got back. Well, I like riding a bike
cause I feel like I am moving, different moving from being in a car. And I love
the feeling of the wind hitting my face or even vibrations I get from the ride.
Will: I like the most when I can go places by
myself. Just open the map and pick a place I’ve never been and try to figure
out how to get there. It’s a good way to get out of town or even finding some
new routes in the city.
